Enterprise Cayman (Outreach)

Another Year With Cayman Enterprise City ‐ This is What I Learned!

About Me

Hello, I am Courtney Thomas - a recent graduate of United World College Maastricht (UWCM). I hold a deep passion for English and the environment and believe that I can contribute to the continued development of the Caymanian community through the power of communication. Thus, I will be attending the University of British Columbia, Okanagan (UBC) to pursue a Bachelors of Arts with a Major in the English Language, Literature, and Minor in Management. Upon the completion of my degree, I aspire to return to the Cayman Islands and contribute to the economic gain and development of my community.

Last summer, I had the pleasure of interning with Cayman Enterprise City (CEC) as the Marketing Intern. The experience allowed me to immerse myself in the world of marketing with the support of the friendly and welcoming atmosphere provided by CEC. My summer with CEC provided a wonderful introduction into the world of marketing which sparked a lot of revelations about my passions, potential future endeavors and prompted me to reapply, to continue to broaden my knowledge of the working world.

This Summer, I am currently interning with “Key Media SEZC”, as a Search Engine Organisation (SEO) Content Marketing Intern. Key Media is a niche publishing company within the special economic zone that specialises in the management and publication of magazines and websites, in addition to the execution of events. As an SEO Content Marketing Intern, I have been in charge of meta-descriptions, evergreen articles, white paper campaigns, and designing work in the google data studio.

Throughout the summer I have learned many things through the tasks that I have been assigned. The most important thing I've learned is the value of search engine organisation and the role it plays in attracting potential consumers and clients to websites, and consequently businesses. Through the creation of meta‐descriptions, I got to explore a range of persuasive language techniques, and the role they play in attracting and ultimately creating the appeal that ensures potential consumers and businesses to open the links.

In addition to this, I was granted the opportunity to apply skills gained through my studies at UWCM, in term so research, and writing, as my tasks also included the production of documents that would allow the reader to understand an issue, solve a problem or make a decision surrounding popular topics within their industry at the moment. Through this task, I learned the importance of tone and selecting the appropriate amount of research and knowledge to avoid overwhelming readers.

The current highlight of my internship placement is linked to the expansion of my knowledge horizon, in the sense that I have been thrown into the deep end not having any prior experience on search engine organization, mortgages, insurance and human resource management. The internships with CEC, and Key Media, enabled me to gain a newfound sense of professionalism, direction, and consequently illuminating what it means to be in the professional world. The Summer in the City internship program is an excellent opportunity to explore your passions, in a professional environment to ascertain if it is really for you. I would advise all eligible participants to take the opportunity and do an internship!

The “Summer in the City” internship programme is open to Caymanians between the ages of 18-25 and lasts for one to two months during the summer months. Areas of placement include: internet technology, media & video production, science & technology, commodities & derivatives, and maritime & aviation services.
